Avi Shaw-Krauss - Math, Physics

Avi recently obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Columbia University where he was an award-winning teacher's assistant. He has taught students from middle school through college and looks forward to a career as a college professor. Avi greatly enjoys teaching math and physics and believes there are fascinating ideas to learn at every student's level.

Byron Roberts - Biology

Byron is a PhD student in the Tri-Institutional Training Program in Computational Biology & Medicine at Cornell University Weill Medical College, building and using computational models of heart cells to better understand why patients develop certain types of cardiac electrical disturbances (arrhythmias). Byron obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, graduating with Highest Honors. After graduating from UC Davis, Byron took a position as a postgraduate researcher, conducting brain cancer research for two years before starting graduate school.

Byron has served as both a teaching assistant and tutor, working with students from high school to university level.

Stephen Weierman - Math & Computer Science

Stephen holds a masters degree in computer science from DePaul University in Chicago. He has worked as an adjunct instructor, teaching mathematics and computer science at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, and has over 10 years of experience working as a private tutor. Stephen is well-versed in the agile development process, object-oriented software development, and Java programming. He has also worked professionally as a Java developer.

Stephen is also very interested in abstract algebra and combinatorics, and has given talks on group theory. He plans on going back to school to work on a doctorate in mathematics in the near future.

When not working, Stephen enjoys reading philosophy, board games, video games, and karaoke.

John Gaetano - Physiology, Anatomy & Cell Biology, Microbiology

John is a M.D. student at New York Medical College, and enjoys teaching and learning about all aspects of the natural sciences, especially physiology, anatomy & cell biology, and microbiology. John plans on entering the field of internal medicine and hopes to sub-specialize in gastroenterology. In addition, he has an interest in career counseling and guidance for those interested in pursuing a career as a physician. After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder, John completed his premedical studies at Columbia.

Maneesha Kumar - Physics and Engineering

Maneesha is currently working on her second Master's degree as a student in the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences program in Industrial Hygiene at CUNY Hunter. Maneesha obtained her first Master's degree in Ergonomics and Biomechanics from New York University and a Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering with from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to enjoying the student life, Maneesha also works as an independent ergonomic consultant in the tri-state area.

Anna Kudlash - High School Math

While in High School one of Anna's math teachers taught her to see the beauty of mathematics. Since then Anna realized she wanted to become a teacher and make everybody love mathematics the way she was taught.

Anna comes from Moscow where she got her undergraduate degree in pure mathematics at Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. Now she is a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University. Mathematics education has always been her major interest, which is why she started tutoring math when she was 18 years old. 7 years of tutoring experience has enriched Anna's teaching skills in such areas of mathematics as geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

Seyed M. Mottaghinejad - Statistics and Linear Algebra

Seyed holds a B.S. in Statistics, and 3 years of experience tutoring various subjects in stats, including introductory statistics, regression, ANOVA, experimental design, and nonparametric methods. Seyed is also familiar with statistical packages such as R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, and Excel. He is able to explain complex statistical concepts in plain English. Jaroslav - Physics & Math

Jaroslav is a professional practicing physicist. He has obtained a Ph.D. in physics from the CUNY Graduate center in 2009, and is continuing in cutting-edge research in his field. Throughout his professional career, Jaroslav has been enjoying tutoring physics and math. He was an instructor at the Science Learning Center at Lehman College. He worked as a math and physics tutor for Kaplan Educational Foundation. In addition, Jaroslav has taught college-level physics at Lehman College. Jaroslav is currently postdoctoral research scientist in University of Brussels, Belgium.

Steve - Statistics

Steve has his Masters degree in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University. He completed a summer internship in derivatives trading in 2008 at an investment bank, and is preparing for his career in the finance industry. In his previous career, he was a consulting actuary who earned his ASA in 2007. Steve began tutoring students while attending NC State University in the university tutoring center. He has also worked with students at non-profit after school programs in Washington, DC and New York City. Steve particularly enjoys tutoring students in statistics, probability, and financial mathematics.

Matthew Rossi

Matthew Rossi is an MFA Creative Writing candidate at Columbia University, due to turn in his thesis in May. While at Columbia, he discovered his profound love of teaching, and has been in the classroom ever since. Matthew brings a high level of enjoyment to teaching both creative and academic writing to his students. He shows his students that writing is not a chore imposed upon them, but is their opportunity to express their thoughts and make their opinions heard.

Our tutors have extended experience in teaching or tutoring their respective courses. They are also continuously involved in various innovative educational projects that are developed for our students, here at MSA. Prior to becoming an MSA instructor, applicants must undergo a rigorous interview process in which they are screened for academic excellence and effective teaching skills. Transcripts, work experience, and academic coursework are carefully reviewed. The applicant must also successfully complete an MSA qualification test. In addition, our security department conducts intensive background checks on all our tutors to ensure a safe learning environment.
